What Makes Queenstown, Queenstown?

I knew that Queenstown would be special, but I didn’t understand why. When I actually got here, I confirmed this notion pretty quickly (i.e. right when I saw Lake Wakatipu).

My experience, like anyone’s, is completely unique from those who have been here before me, so what combination of agreed-upon factors makes Queenstown special? What about the people, culture, energy, scenery, food, location, or historical significance draws us to certain places? Paris may be the city of love and Rome may be the ancient city, Queenstown is the international town with outdoorsy sports and adrenaline activities galore. Similarly to my first impressions of the highly-lauded Paris and Rome, I loved Queenstown from our first date! It’s that first impression, that drive in from the airport in some instances, or long-distance journey in others, that sets the tone of the place.

Epic Landscapes and Ski Season Energy

We drove through canyons overlooking the Kawarau River and saw helicopters, bungee jumping sites, and massive snow-covered mountains. As we approached Queenstown, we saw new housing developments. These are incredibly enticing to me, as someone who used to live in a 200-year-old home in New York. We got to the roundabout in Frankton where the lake comes into view. And wow – the combination of the view both across the lake to Kelvin Heights and of the houses in Frankton hugging the lake is so incredible. Ultimately, when we got downtown, I felt like I was transported into a cute ski town with stone buildings, wooden fireplaces, and the earthy-smell of a rustic lodge. And bars, young people, and a vibrancy that everywhere else in New Zealand lacks. The one exception might be Cuba Street in Wellington on a good day.

Just three blocks from the main street was Queenstown beach and Queenstown Gardens. Juxtaposed to the massive mountains, gondola, ski fields, and paragliders, was the expansive lake with an abundance of water sports and places to swim. I was starting to feel right at home. A summer of waterskiing here I come!

Something one may hear frequently in New Zealand is that Queenstown is the best place in New Zealand. From what I have seen so far, I completely agree, hands-down.
