I lived in Mammoth Lakes, California for over a year and I can honestly say the paddleboarding location options there are abundant. Here, I’ll share my 5 favorite spots to paddleboard around Mammoth Lakes.
Lake Mary: Accessible and Easy
Lake Mary is the most popular spot to paddleboard around Mammoth Lakes. It’s stunning and easily accessible from town. Paddling the perimeter of the lake is a solid loop that takes around 30 minutes. There is parking all around the lake, just make sure your tires are not touching the road, or you could get a ticket from a local ranger.
Lake George: Sunset Paddle
Lake George is the highest elevation lake in the Lakes Basin. It is a coveted camping spot and is always popular. One of my favorite after-work activities was going for a sunset paddle there. This is a great spot to paddle because the lake is smaller and provides less activity than Lake Mary, which usually has fishing boats and kayaks out on the water.
Rock Creek Lake: A Beautiful Fall Show
Rock Creek has an impressive array of fall colors if you go at the right time of year! Although temps drop, the contrasts of the blue water and orange fall foliage makes for a scenic paddle.
June Lake: Crystal Clear Waters
June Lake is ideally located under a dramatic mountain range and with ample opportunities for setting up camp at the beach. It tends to get busy, but it’s worth the hype.
Tenaya Lake: Magical Yosemite
Anyone who’s familiar with Yosemite National Park knows Tenaya Lake. You will have to navigate entry restrictions for Yosemite (National Parks pass and possible permit) to enter the park. But it is completely and totally worth a chilly dip and a spectacular day on the water.
